The University of South Dakota women's basketball team fell at Seattle, 52-42 in nonconference action Saturday in Seattle, Wash.
USD (8-11) finished the road trip - which took the Coyotes to five different states - with a 2-4 record.
Kara Iverson (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) led USD with 11 points, while Annie Roche (So., Vermillion, S.D.) added 10. Tatiana Heck's 15 points led Seattle (5-20).
USD was within four with eight minutes left Saturday, but was doomed by an untimely cold spell over the final stretch. The Coyotes had fought back from a 12-point second-half deficit to cut the lead to 42-38 with 8:16 left after Roche drained a three-pointer.
However, Seattle held the Coyotes to just four points and one field goal over the final eight minutes to pull away to the win. After USD cut the lead to four, Seattle scored the next six points - holding the Coyotes without a point for nearly six minutes - to push the lead to 48-38.
Roche ended the USD cold spell with a three with 2:32 left to bring USD within 48-41, but the Coyotes got no closer the rest of the way.
The Coyotes shot 35.7 percent (15-of-42), compared to 41.2 percent for Seattle. Turnovers were costly for USD as the Coyotes committed 22, including 13 in the first half.
USD jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening minutes on four points from Jasmine Mosley (Sr., Bellevue, Neb.). Seattle tied the game at 9-9 before Abby Kinder (Jr., Granger, Ind.) hit a three-pointer to push USD up 12-9 with 9:32 to go in the first half.
Seattle went on a 15-5 run to close the half, however, building a 24-17 lead that the Redhawks took into halftime.
Foul trouble, cold shooting and turnovers combined to slow USD's offensive attack in the first half. The Coyotes shot just 30.4 percent (7-of-23) in the first half and committed 13 turnovers. In addition, USD starters Roche, Amber Hegge (So., Crofton, Neb.) and Mosley each picked up two fouls and were limited to a combined 19 minutes in the opening half. Also, key reserve Jamie Young (Jr., Great Falls, Mont.) picked up three fouls in the opening frame.
Kinder led USD with six points in the first half, while Mosley had four and Iverson three. Down seven at halftime, USD cut the gap to 28-24 after Iverson drained a three-pointer with 17:20 left.
Seattle opened the lead to double digits for the first time at 38-26 after a three by Sam Messersmith, but again, USD cut the gap to four (42-38) after Roche nailed a three-pointer with 8:16 left. USD was unable to cut the gap further however down the stretch.
For the game, Kinder, Hegge and Mosley had five rebounds each for USD. Teresa Case (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) led with four assists, while Roche and Iverson had three steals each.
USD returns home for a game on Monday, Feb. 8 against Sioux Falls. Game time is 7 p.m. at the DakotaDome.
