Big First Half Helps Coyote Women Down Sioux Falls, 62-39

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota women's basketball team built a commanding 35-9 halftime lead and rolled to a 62-39 win over the University of Sioux Falls in nonconference action Monday night in Vermillion, S.D.

USD (9-11) ended a three-game losing streak with the win.

The Coyotes were led by Jasmine Mosley (Sr., Bellevue, Neb.) with 16 points and five rebounds. Teresa Case (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) had a solid all-around game with 10 points, three rebounds and a game-high four steals.

Annie Roche (So., Vermillion, S.D.) added 10 points, three rebounds and four assists for USD. All nine USD players that saw time scored in the game.

The Coyotes dominated the first half in every phase, setting the tone for the rest of the night.

USD jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first 3:42, keyed by two 3-pointers by Case. The Cougars cut the lead to 12-7 but it was all USD the rest of the first half, as the Coyotes outscored the Cougars 23-2 over the final 12 minutes of the half to take a 35-9 lead into halftime.

USD held the Cougars without a point over the final 8:55 of the half and limited them to just 17.6 percent shooting (3-of-17).

Meanwhile, USD's offense was hitting on all cylinders, shooting 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field, including 57.1 percent from three-point range. Roche and Mosley had eight points each in the first half for USD, while Case had six. Seven USD players had at least three points in the first half. USD had a 16-10 edge in rebounds as well, while Roche had three assists and Case had three steals.

In the second half, Case hit another three at the 19:33 mark to push USD up 38-9, which was USD's biggest lead of the night, and from there, the Coyotes cruised to their ninth win of 2009-10.

USD finished the game shooting 53.1 percent from the field while limiting the Cougars to 27.5 percent shooting. USD had a 33-23 edge in rebounds, led by Kara Iverson (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) with six.

Amber Hegge (So., Crofton, Neb.) had eight points and four assists in 21 minutes for USD. Jackie Hiebert (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) had five points and three rebounds off the bench. Pam January (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) had a career-high four assists.

USD had a 34-4 edge in points in the paint. The Coyotes (9-11) resume Great West Conference play Thursday at home against Chicago State. The game, which is part of a women's/men's doubleheader, begins at 6 p.m. at the DakotaDome.

Notes: The 39 points surrendered by USD was a season-low...USD is now 5-1 at the DakotaDome this season, and 5-2 in home games. One of the losses came at Sioux Falls Arena against UW-Green Bay to open the season, which was considered a home game for USD...the Coyotes have now won nine straight meetings against Sioux Falls.
