Kinder, Coyotes Dominate Houston Baptist, 76-45

Vermillion, S.D. -- Junior guard Abby Kinder tied season-highs with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead three Coyotes with double-doubles, as the University of South Dakota women's basketball team posted a 76-45 rout of Houston Baptist on Saturday night in the DakotaDome. The victory snapped a three-game skid for USD to move the Coyotes to 13-15 on the year and 5-6 in the Great West Conference, while the Huskies fell to 3-24 and 1-11.

Kinder (Granger, Ind.) hit 4-of-11 from the field, but notched a 10-of-10 showing from the free-throw line where USD went 97 percent (28-of-29) as a team. Sophomore forward Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) posted 15 points and 12 rebounds, while senior center Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) had 12 points and 10 rebounds. USD shot 39 percent (22-of-57) from the field, including 25 percent (4-of-16) behind the arc, while holding HBU to 25 percent (15-of-60) from the field.

A decisive 18-0 run in the first half - and excellent free-throw shooting - proved to be the difference in USD's convincing win.

It was a struggle for both teams to start the game, as neither could find the basket. The Coyotes and Huskies combined for 15 points and five lead changes in the first 11 minutes, until a Kinder basket tied the contest at 10 with 7:10 left and sparked the 18-0 USD run. Hegge and Mosley combined to score the next 14 points for the Coyotes and Kinder added two free throws to cap the spurt and put the Coyotes up 26-10 with 1:44 to go.

Junior guard Teresa Case (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and senior forward Kara Iverson (Yankton, S.D.) added two points apiece to give USD a 30-14 advantage headed into halftime. Kinder had nine points and six rebounds in the half, including 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, while Hegge had seven points. Mosley contributed six points and six rebounds, as the Coyotes shot 31 percent (8-of-26) from the field and 93 percent (13-of-14) from the charity strip. HBU hit just 19 percent (6-of-32) from the field after going scoreless for six minutes in the half.

South Dakota pushed the lead to as many as 24 in the first four minutes of the second frame with a trey from Iverson and buckets from Mosley and sophomore guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.). HBU crafted a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 17 at 41-24 with 13:20 to go, but USD responded with a 9-2 run of its own thanks to Hegge and Mosley to push the advantage back to 24 midway through the period.

Sophomore forward Jackie Hiebert (Maple Grove, Minn.) chipped in the next eight USD points and Kinder nailed a trey to put the Coyotes up by 30 and USD cruised from there over the final five minutes.

Roche added five assists for USD, while Case had four.

It was Senior Night for USD, and with a commanding lead in the second half, Mosley and Iverson - the lone two seniors - were substituted for and went off the court to a big ovation from the Coyote crowd.

USD concludes the regular season by hosting NJIT tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the DakotaDome. The women's bracket for next week's Great West Conference Championship will also be announced tomorrow night.
