Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. -- Senior Katie Quinones scored midway through the second overtime to lift
the University of South Dakota women's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 double-overtime win over Western Illinois in nonconference action Monday afternoon in Vermillion, S.D.
It was the first goal of the season for Quinones (Rochester, Minn.), who now has 20 for her USD career.
USD (2-2-1) trailed 2-1 late in regulation when sophomore Erin Bello (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored on a free kick to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team was able to score in the final 3:40 of regulation or in the first 10-minute overtime frame. Quinones' goal, which, came with 5:56 left in the second overtime frame and off of an assist from freshman Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.).
The game - which was played in a bizarre variety of weather, from calm conditions to gusty wind to rain to sunshine - was a battle from the start.
The two teams played to a 0-0 first half tie, despite a 12-5 edge in shots for Western Illinois (1-3-1). Senior goalkeeper Jen Ogren (Raymore, Mo.) had seven of her 13 saves in the first half.
The early moments of the second half were played in a steady rain. USD broke the 0-0 deadlock when Teslow scored off of an assist from freshman Afton Keiser (Sioux Falls, S.D.) to give
USD a 1-0 lead at the 58:23 mark of the contest.
Western Illinois scored the next two goals, however, to take a 2-1 lead with less than 13 minutes left.
The contest stayed that way until Bello scored a crucial goal to tie the game at 2-2, which set up the overtime frames.
Ogren finished with 13 saves. The assists were the first of the collegiate careers for Teslow and Keiser.
Quinones led USD with six shots, while Bello and Teslow had four each.
USD, which is 2-1 so far on its six-game homestand, resumes Thursday against Creighton. Game time is 4 p.m. at the USD Soccer Field.
Notes: USD is now 1-0-1 on the year against Western Illinois. The two teams tied 1-1 in Macomb, Ill., earlier this year...USD is 2-1-1 against future Summit League opponents so far, with games remaining against South Dakota State and North Dakota State...Teslow leads USD with three goals this season while Bello has two.
