ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore guard Tempestt Wilson scored 15 points and
junior forward Amber Hegge recorded her first double-double of the season to lead the South Dakota women's basketball team to a 60-45 win over Cornell (N.Y.) in nonconference action Thursday night in Ithaca, N.Y. The Coyotes improved to 9-7 on the season with the victory.
Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) hit 6-of-14 field goals, while adding five rebounds, while Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) finished with 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds to go along with four blocks. Senior guard Teresa Case (Sioux Falls, S.D.), junior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) and freshman forward Stacia Robertson (Grand Island, Neb.) each had eight points for the Coyotes. Roche led with four assists while Robertson set a career-high with three steals.
South Dakota held a commanding 47-28 edge on the boards, including 19-7 on the offensive glass.
The game was tied at 29-29 at halftime. Cornell scored the first points of the second half but the Coyotes came back with 10 straight points over the next four minutes to take a 39-31 lead. Wilson had five points during that key stretch while Case added a three.
The Coyotes also stepped up their defense, holding the Big Red to just four points over the first 9:43 of the second half as they built their lead.
Cornell closed the gap to 42-38, but the Coyotes scored nine straight - six coming on threes from freshman guard Katelyn Edwards (Crete, Neb.) and Case - to push the lead into double digits for the first time. Robertson converted a layup with 4:43 left to make it 51-38, and from there the Coyotes remained in control in picking up their ninth win of 2010-11.
South Dakota was down 14-6 early but responded with a 9-1 run - with Hegge scoring four points and Wilson adding a three - to tie the game at 15-15 with 12:25 left in the first half. After Cornell built a 23-19 lead, the Coyotes came back with a 10-2 spurt which pushed South Dakota in front, 29-25. Roche hit a three to put the lead to 27-25, and Wilson followed with a basket.
The game was tied at 29-29 at halftime. Wilson sparked the Coyotes with 10 points in the first half, while Hegge had seven and Robertson five. Both teams were an identical 11-of-29 (38 percent) from the field in the first half, although the Coyotes had a 24-16 edge in rebounds.
For the game, the Coyotes shot 36 percent (20-of-55), compared to 33 percent (15-of-46) for Cornell.
South Dakota will look for its second straight win on Sunday at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Game time is 1 p.m. CT in Edwardsville, Ill.
Notes: Junior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) had one block in the game and tied the South Dakota single-season record of 54, which is held by Hegge.
