Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota women's soccer team took a 2-0 lead into the final five minutes, but Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis scored two goals late as the two teams battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie in Summit League action Sunday in Vermillion, S.D.
The Coyotes (1-7-3, 1-0-1 Summit) received a goal from freshman Morgan Kayvan (Keokuk, Iowa), with an assist going to freshman Alex Pantze (Faribault, Minn.). Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor had nine saves for South Dakota.
"This one was a tough one to lose because we were up by two goals with five minutes to go in the game," South Dakota head coach Mandy Green said. "IUPUI never gave up so credit to them for coming back. After an emotional win like the one we had on Friday, it is always tough to come back and play with the same emotion and energy the next game. We did a great job getting up by twp goals and then lacked the killer instinct to put the game away. We will learn from the mistakes we made and hopefully never make these same mistakes again."
South Dakota took an early 1-0 lead when the IUPUI deflected the ball into its own goal at the 9:24 mark. Kayvan scored her first goal as a Coyote at the 32:51 mark of the first half with Pantze providing the assist.
The score stood at 2-0 until the final five minutes, when IUPUI's Chelsi McHenry scored two goals in a span of 2:06 to tie the game at 2-2.
The contest remained tied through both overtime frames, making the final score 2-2.
IUPUI held a 17-13 edge in shots. Junior Erin Bello (Fort Collins, Colo.) and sophomore Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.) each had three shots, while sophomore Afton Keiser (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and freshman Lauren Bennett (Walton, Ky.) had two each.
South Dakota begins a stretch of three straight Summit League road games starting Friday, Oct. 7 at Oakland. Game time is 6 p.m. in Rochester, Mich.
"Overall this was a good weekend for us," Green said. "It was great to get our first Summit League win on Friday and we put ourselves in a position to win against IUPUI. It is great to see how far this team has come and exciting to know that we haven' come close to reaching our potential yet."
