Coyote Women Edge Creighton, 56-53 in OT Thriller; Program Wins 600th game

OMAHA, Neb. - Tempestt Wilson's jumper with 39 seconds left proved to be the game-winner as the South Dakota women's basketball team topped Creighton, 56-53, in overtime in nonconference action Tuesday night in Omaha, Neb. The Coyotes improved to 2-0 on the year with the win, while Creighton fell to 2-2.

The win was the 600th win for the Coyote women's basketball program.

Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) finished with nine points, three rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) scored a game-high 14 points while adding three assists and two steals. Senior forward Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) had 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals, while senior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) added nine points, four blocks and 12 rebounds.

The Coyotes held Creighton to just 30.3 percent shooting (20-of-66) in the game, including 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from three-point range.

"We just guarded every single play," South Dakota head coach Ryun Williams said. "We showed a great deal of toughness. Everybody contributed, whether it was one rebound, one steal, or playing three or four minutes. It was a great team win."

Creighton led 53-49 with overtime but the Coyotes scored the final seven points of the game to seal the win. Yackley, who was clutch in key moments for the Coyotes, scored four straight points - on a layup and two foul shots - to tie the game at 53-53 with 1:27 left.

The game was tied in the final minute of overtime when Wilson delivered the clutch jumper, giving the Coyotes a 55-53 lead with 39 seconds left.

More importantly, the Coyotes got the stop they needed in the final seconds. Yackley blocked a three-point attempt by Ally Jensen, and junior Pam January (Richfield, Minn.) hauled in the key rebound. Moments later, Boss hit 1-of-2 free throws, and a desperation three by Creighton was off, and the Coyotes had prevailed in a big road win.

"We had enough poise and toughness to gut out a win," Williams said. "We just made the right plays at the right time."

Creighton opened the first 4:13 of the game on a 10-2 run, hitting four of its first five field goals. The Coyotes , meanwhile, opened just 1-of-8 from the field.

January ended a field goal drought of nearly five minutes with a three at the 12:10, starting a 7-0 run that brought the Coyotes within 14-11 with 10:17 left in the half.

Creighton pushed the lead to 24-17 with 3:07 left in the half, but the Coyotes answered with a 10-0 run - sparked by eight points from Yackley - to take a 27-24 lead. Wilson also hit a jumper in the lane during that spurt.

That 10-0 run was part of the Coyotes' 13-2 run to close the half. Roche hit a three-pointer to give the Coyotes a 30-26 lead with 27 seconds left in the half, an advantage that took into halftime.

Yackley had eight points in the first half, while January and Roche had five points each. The Coyotes, who opened the game shooting just 16.7 percent, finished the half shooting 44.4 percent (12-of-27), including 50 percent (4-of-8) from three-point range. South Dakota held Creighton to just 36 percent shooting in the half.

The defenses ruled the first eight minutes of the second half. The Coyotes hit just 1-of-11 field goal attempts (9.1 percent) through the first 8:03, while Creighton hit only 3-of-14 (21.4 percent).

The biggest lead in the second half by either team was four. Creighton held a 41-40 lead after Ally Jensen drained a three, but the Coyotes scored the next four points - on baskets by Hegge and freshman Lisa Loeffler (Maplewood, Minn.) to take a 44-43 lead with 4:12 left.

Creighton cut the lead to 44-43, but a Hegge layup with 1:14 left put the Coyotes up 46-43. However, Jasmin Corbin's long three with six seconds left tied the game at 46-46. The Coyotes had the ball with a chance to win in regulation but the shot wouldn't go, setting up overtime.

January and Roche had five points each. Roche led with three steals.

The Coyotes return home for a nonconference game with Viterbo on Sunday, Nov. 27. Game time is 2 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
