Coyote Women Roll Past Viterbo, 82-34

VERMILLION, S.D. - Ten South Dakota players found the scoring column as the Coyote women's basketball team rolled to an 82-34 win over Viterbo in nonconference action Sunday afternoon in Vermillion, S.D. The Coyotes, who have won 11 straight at the DakotaDome, improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Senior forward Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) paced a balanced Coyote attack with 17 points. Freshman Kelly Stewart (Amery, Wis.) added career-highs of 15 points and five steals, while junior guard Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) had 12 points, going 4-of-4 from three-point range. Junior guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) had six points, eight assists and five steals. Freshman Taylor Moore (Milford, Neb.) added nine points off the bench.

South Dakota had a 36-19 edge in bench scoring, while also holding a commanding 44-14 advantage on points in the paint.

"It was good to get our bench some extensive minutes," South Dakota head coach Ryun Williams said. "We have young depth, and they just need time on the floor - to make mistakes, to see the ball go in the basket, to play a little tired...they did a nice job."

The Coyotes controlled the contest from the outside on both ends of the floor, jumping out to a 24-0 lead in the first 11:12 of the game. Hegge scored eight points during that stretch, while Wilson added six and Stewart four. Junior guard Sam Mehr (Apple Valley, Minn.) also drained a three during that stretch.

The Coyotes led by as many 29 in the first half and took a 38-12 lead into halftime. Wilson and Hegge each had 12 points in the first half, while Stewart had six. Yackley had five assists in the first half alone.

South Dakota put the game out of reach in the first 7:05 of the second half, going on a 23-2 run over that stretch to build a 61-14 lead. Senior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) had six points during that spurt, while Hegge had five and Yackley four.

The Coyotes pushed the lead to as many as 49 points on their way to the win.

Junior forward Pam January (Richfield, Minn.) added three assists and two steals off the bench for the Coyotes. Roche, Mehr and Yackley had six points each, while freshman Ashley Olson (Blue Earth, Minn.) scored the first points of her collegiate career and finished with four.

South Dakota resumes action at home Monday against Tabor. The game, part of a women's/men's doubleheader, begins at 5 p.m. at the DakotaDome.
