Vermillion, S.D. -- Junior forward Amber Hegge recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a dominant performance to lead
the South Dakota women's basketball team to a 69-53 win over North Dakota in Great West Conference action Saturday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D. The win improved the Coyotes to 13-9 on the season and 4-1 in the GWC, while North Dakota fell to 8-12 overall and 4-1 in the GWC.
Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the contest for South Dakota. She hit 9-of-17 shots from the field. Including Hegge, four Coyotes scored in double digits. Junior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) followed with 13 points and sophomore guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) added 11 points and five assists. Freshman Stacia Robertson (Grand Island, Neb.) contributed 10 points in the game.
South Dakota shot 48 percent (25-of-52) from the field and 47 percent (10-of-21) from beyond the arc while UND (8-12, 4-1 GWC) was held to 39 percent (19-of-48) and 29 percent (5-of-17). The Coyotes outscored the Sioux 26-20 in the paint and forced 19 turnovers.
The Coyotes scored treys on six of their first seven offensive possessions, going on a 20-2 run over the first 6:37 of the game. Yackley connected on 3-of-4 from behind the arc while sophomore guard Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) contributed two threes and Roche hit one from deep as well. USD kept UND from scoring on their first seven possessions.
After the Sioux cut the lead to nine with 8:45 remaining in the first half, Hegge scored six points and Robertson followed with a basket as the Coyotes built a 28-11 lead. The Coyotes took a 37-25 lead into halftime.
USD shot 48 percent (13-of-27) from the field, including 58 percent (7-of-12) from beyond the arc in the opening half. Hegge led the Coyotes with 10 points and five rebounds while Yackley and Wilson each had three treys. UND was held to 37 percent (9-of-24) and 25 percent (2-of-8). USD forced 10 turnovers and outrebounded the Sioux 16-15.
Hegge scored the first five points of the second half for the Coyotes and two free throws by junior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) increased the lead to 16 with 17:45 to play. UND fought back, cutting the lead to three at 47-44 with a 16-3 run over a span of 6:12.
Hegge took over at that point, scoring eight consecutive points to push the lead back to double digits at 55-44 with 9:57 left. Robertson hit a basket to cap off a decisive 10-0 run for the Coyotes.
North Dakota got no closer than 11 the rest of the way as the Coyotes clinched an unbeaten four-game homestand.
South Dakota continues its conference season at Chicago State Thursday at 5 p.m. Chicago State is currently in first place in the Great West Conference.
