Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota women's soccer team took a 2-1 lead into the second half but Nebraska-Omaha scored twice over the final 45 minutes to record a 3-2 win over the Coyotes in a nonconference game Sunday at the USD Soccer Field in Vermillion, S.D. The contest, which saw a South Dakota record 476 fans in attendance, was the regular-season home opener for the Coyotes (0-2).
Freshman Makena Cameron (Cheyenne, Wyo.) and Colleen Reeves (Rogers, Minn.) scored goals for the Coyotes. Sophomore Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.), freshman Rebecca Pederson (Waconia, Minn.) and freshman Shannon Keller (Black Hawk, S.D.) added assists. Freshman Mackenzie Viktor (Loveland, Colo.) had five saves for the Coyotes.
"We're more consistently doing things well, but we're still having lapses and making mistakes," South Dakota head coach Mandy Green said. "But we are getting better. We have made a ton of improvement in training but we need to translate that to the games."
Cameron scored the first goal of her collegiate career at the 11:41 mark of the first half, with Teslow and Pederson assisting, to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. UNO (1-1) came back seven minutes later and tied the game with a goal to make it 1-1.
The Coyotes broke the tie when Reeves scored at the 28:57 mark off of Keller's corner kick, giving them a 2-1 lead which they took into halftime. South Dakota had a 5-4 edge in shots in the first half.
UNO tied the game at 2-2 at the 54:57 mark, and broke the tie with a goal by Jordyn Braun with 24 minutes left.
South Dakota had two great chances in the final two minutes. A shot by junior Erin Bello (Fort Collins, Co.) just missed clearing Maverick goalkeeper Katelyn Tschida, and seconds later, Teslow's shot hit the cross bar and was deflected out by Tschida.
Freshman Lauren Bennett (Walton, Ky.) had three shots for the Coyotes while Bello had two, both on goal.
South Dakota returns to action Wednesday at home against Wisconsin-Green Bay. Game time is 11 a.m. at the USD Soccer Field.
