South Dakota wins home match, conference match against Omaha

VERMILLION, S.D. - South Dakota volleyball earned its first home win of the season on Monday night with a 3-1 victory (25-10, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18) over the Omaha Mavericks in Summit League action.

It was the first win for the Coyotes in the Coyote Den.  The win moved the Coyotes to 10-14 this season, and 4-8 in the Summit League.

Kendall Kritenbrink (Gretna, Neb.), who was named the Summit League's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, picked up 20 kills in the match.  She also notched a block and a block assist.  Sydney Dimke (Ham Lake, Minn.) and Kim Bulaga (Crystal Lake, Ill.) both added eight kills, and Tori Kroll (Germantown, Wis.) had 39 assists.

Riley Haug (Gretna, Neb.) led the defensive effort with 17 digs. Bulaga recorded 12 digs and Katie Bunkers (Columbus, Neb.) had 10 digs. 

The Coyotes limited the attack errors, having only 16 over the four sets.  They forced Omaha (6-16, 1-9) to commit 28 attack errors in the match.

South Dakota got off to a fast start in the first set with a 5-1 run and finished the set with a 13-3 run.  Bulaga, Kritenbrink and Kelsey Biltoft (Nelson, Neb.) all had three kills to set the pace for an offense that had only one error in the set.  Omaha had nine attack errors to seven kills.

Omaha was able to tie the match behind four kills by Natalie Ebke.  Ebke led the Mavericks with 14 kills in the match.

Kritenbrink picked up the attack with 13 kills on 25 attacks over the last two sets.  Dimke, Kroll and Melissa Firtko (Racine, Wis.) all added four kills over the final two sets to keep Omaha off balance.  South Dakota continued to keep the ball in play, having five errors in set three and three in set four.

Omaha struggled against South Dakota's defense in the final sets.  They only had nine kills in set three, and had 11 offensive errors in the final set.

South Dakota will be at Kansas City on Friday for a match at 7 p.m.  They have two more home games this season, where they will host South Dakota State on Nov. 2 and North Dakota State on Nov. 4.
