VERMILLION, S.D.-- South Dakota women's soccer suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Kansas City in its season finale. Kansas City forward Taylor Bare scored the game's only goal at the 35:36 mark. The goal was Bare's sixth of the season.
The Coyotes put a lot of pressure on the Kangaroos defense, taking a season-high nine corner kicks as a team and ripping 10 shots at goal, including six in the second half.
With the game still tied in the 20th minute Rebecca Sparkman (Eden Prairie, Minn.) cleared a UMKC cross out to Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.) who lofted a pass over the 'Roo back line to a streaking Danielle Anderson (Elkhorn, Neb.). However, Kansas City goalie Nina Tzianos aggressively came out and beat Anderson to the ball and made a successful clearance.
I'm proud of how far we have come, said head coach Mandy Green. As the season has gone on we have lessened our mistakes and gained a lot of valuable experience with this young group. Twenty-four of the 27 girls on our team have been Division I athletes for less than two years, and they are getting great game experience and learning to make decisions under pressure. There is a lot of learning going on during games and it all takes time, but we have made a lot of improvement this year.
Coyote goalkeeper Jen Shaefer (Cary, N.C.) had a breakthrough performance, making eight saves including an impressive block of a Bare shot on a breakaway in the first half.
South Dakota's two seniors, Erin Bello (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Rachel Greene (Onalaska, Wis.), were recognized before the game and again at halftime for their dedication and contributions to Coyote soccer over the last four years.
