Waves drop Coyotes at Pepperdine Tourney

Malibu, Calif. - Three Pepperdine Waves reached at least 10 points as Pepperdine dropped South Dakota's women's basketball team 70-54 during the first day of the Pepperdine Holiday Tournament. 

Robie Mayberry recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Ea Shoushtari scored 14 and Tessa Emerson scored 10 points for Pepperdine (2-2).  The Coyotes (1-4) were led by Polly Harrington, who scored the most points in the game with 15.

Nicole Seekamp and Heidi Hoff were the only other Coyotes to score more than five points.  Seekamp had eight points and three assists, while Hoff hit on two three-pointers for six points.

The Coyotes shot 31 percent (18-58) during the game while Pepperdine finished at 39.1 percent (25-64).  USD trailed by five at halftime (34-29), but was outscored 36-25 in the second half.

South Dakota was outrebounded for the first time this season, losing the battle on the boards 47-38.  Freshman Margaret McCloud led USD with eight rebounds, while Seekamp tallied seven.

Both teams tied at 15 turnovers, but the Coyotes had an 8-5 edge in steals with Alexis Yackley and Tia Hemiller both recording three.

The Coyotes will play Seton Hall on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT.  The Pirates lost to Wyoming in game one of the tournament, 55-45.
