AVON, Ind. - Junior Marc Gubbels fired an opening-round 77 to lead the South Dakota men's golf team at the opening day of Butler Spring Invitational, which is being held at Prestwick Country Club in Avon, Ind. The Coyotes are in 10th place after the opening day after posting a team score of 321, just one shot out of ninth and 11 out of eighth place.

Gubbels (Yankton, S.D.) is in a tie for 25th after the opening round. He shot a 38 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine. Senior John Vining (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had a solid round with an 80, while senior Lucas Turner (Bowdle, S.D.) shot an 81.

Freshman Connor McDonagh-Poh (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore Nolan Schmidt (Avoca, Iowa) rounded out the Coyote lineup with scores of 83 and 87, respectively.

Dayton leads the team competition with a 289, led by Sean Keating, who shot a 66.

The final 18 holes are set for Tuesday.
