Kansas City jumps over Coyotes, 60-56

VERMILLION, S.D. – Eilise O’Connor scored 14 points while Taylor Leathers scored 12 points to lead Kansas City past South Dakota 60-56 on Saturday at the Swinney Recreation Center.

The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for Kansas City (5-12, 1-3).  The Kangaroos shot 47 percent and led by as many as 18 in the second half. 

Polly Harrington led the Coyotes (7-10, 2-2) in scoring with 14 points and added six rebounds.  Tempestt Wilson had 13 points, while Nicole Seekamp had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Despite being last in the Summit League in rebounding, Kansas City became the third team this season to outrebound South Dakota with a 38-31 advantage.  South Dakota entered the game as the top-rebounding team in the conference at 42 per game.

South Dakota had a 20-7 run in the second half and got as close as three with 11 seconds left.  They forced 12 of the Kangaroos’ 19 turnovers in the second half, nine of which coming off of steals.  Alexis Yackley led the Coyotes with four steals, all of which came in the second half. 

On the offensive end, Yackley had two assists to move into seventh in USD history in all-time assists at 338.

South Dakota will return to the DakotaDome to host Fort Wayne on Thursday at 7 p.m.
