MACOMB, ILL.-- Tempestt Wilson's rebound of Charnelle Reed's missed free throw with four seconds remaining sealed a 63-60 South Dakota win at the Waste Management Court in Macomb, Ill. on Thursday night. With the win the Coyotes (10-10, 5-2 Summit) remain in second place in the Summit League standings.
USD's Lisa Loeffler recorded her first career double-double, scoring 12 points and adding 13 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. It was the first double-double of Loeffler's career. Nicole Seekamp's 13 points led the Coyotes while Tempestt Wilson added 12 points and three assists.
Western Illinois' (10-9, 3-4 Summit) Ashley Luke led all scorers with a career-high 19 points. Luke also led her team in rebounds (8) and blocked shots (3). Michelle Maher was the only other Leatherneck to hit double-figures in scoring (12).
An 11-1 run over the final five minutes of the first-half allowed the `Yotes to open up an eight-point 39-31 halftime lead. Western Illinois cut the USD lead to two-points on four different occasions in the second half but were never able to regain the lead. Neither team scored during the final 3:42 of the game as South Dakota held on for the win.
South Dakota outrebounded Western Illinois 41-22 and scored 10 second chance points on 13 offensive rebounds. The Coyotes have been outrebounding their opponents by an average of eight boards per game this season.
Tonight's win over Western Illinois will be televised on Saturday at 5 p.m. on Mediacom Channel 22.
The Coyotes will play their second-consecutive road game Saturday night as they take on the IUPUI Jaguars in Indianapolis, Ind. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
