BROOKINGS, S.D. – Ashley Eide scored 22 points to lead South Dakota State past South Dakota 72-60 on Sunday at Frost Arena.
The win gave the Jackrabbits (11-5, 3-0) early possession of first place in the Summit League standings and extended their home winning streak against South Dakota (7-9, 2-1) to 17 games. SDSU also recorded the highest-point total against the Coyotes this season.
A trio of Coyotes scored in double figures with Tempestt Wilson leading the way with a season-high 19 points. Nicole Seekamp contributed 15 points and Polly Harrington added 14 points. Wilson led in rebounds with seven, Alexis Yackley had four steals, and Pam January had a season-high four assists.
Outside of Eide for SDSU, Megan Waytashek had 15 points and Leah Dietl scored eight. The Jackrabbits shot 54 percent from the field, drew nine fouls and went 9 for 12 from the free throw line in the first half to vault to a 36-25 halftime lead.
South Dakota State took advantage of USD mistakes, scoring 19 points off of 16 Coyote turnovers. Thirteen of those points came in the second half when USD turned the ball over 10 times. SDSU also edged USD inside, winning the points in the paint battle 36-28 and the second chance points stat 9-6 despite USD having a 10-8 advantage in offensive rebounds.
The Coyotes continued to struggle from 3-point range, shooting 1 for 9. South Dakota has shot 20 percent from 3-point range over the last six games. Wilson, however, has shot 43 percent beyond the arc in the same stretch.
South Dakota had a chance to cut what was once a 15-point second half lead down to six twice, but could not find the basket needed to do so. The lead would balloon back up to double-digits on both occasions.
The win gave the Jackrabbits a 5-4 lead in the South Dakota Showdown Series standings, but South Dakota will get a chance to get even with SDSU when the two teams meet again on Jan. 30 at the DakotaDome.
USD will be on the road at Kansas City on Saturday before returning home to host Fort Wayne on Jan. 17. The Kansas City game starts at 2 p.m.
