VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota swept past the Denver Pioneers 25-21, 25-22, 26-24 at the DakotaDome on Friday to move to 5-0 in Summit League play and to take sole possession of first place in the league standings. The win gave Denver (10-8, 4-1) its first loss ever in Summit League play and dropped the Pioneers into second in the standings.
Kendall Kritenbrink had 16 kills to lead the South Dakota (14-6) attack while Kelsey Biltoft chipped in nine kills. Audrey Reeg led the Coyotes in digs with nine and Tori Kroll had 40 assists.
The Coyotes had more kills than Denver in each set and finished with a 50-43 edge in the stat. USD trailed just twice in the match, once in the second set and once in the third set, and led by as many as nine in the final set.
Colleen King led the Pioneers in kills with 11 while Sarah Schmid added eight kills. Kate Acker led Denver defensively with 12 digs.
The Coyotes lead the Pioneers by one game in the league standings, while defending league champion Fort Wayne and IUPUI are tied for third at 2-2.
The Coyotes are off the rest of the weekend but will host Western Illinois on Oct. 18 in the DakotaDome at 7 p.m.
