Omaha tops USD, Kritenbrink sets season kills record

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite a record setting night for South Dakota's Kendall Kritenbrink, Omaha benefitted from 39 Coyote attack errors as the Mavericks topped South Dakota volleyball 23-25, 25-23, 27-29. 25-22, 17-15 in Sapp Fieldhouse on Friday night.

Michaela Schimmer recorded a triple-double with 12 kills, 26 assists and 20 digs to lead Omaha (7-21, 2-11), while two more Mavs recorded double-doubles. Kelley Wollack led the Maverick attack with 17 kills and added 19 digs, while Bailey Baxter recorded 25 assists and 13 digs. Megan Schmale and Amy Taylor had double-digit kill efforts with 12 and 10 respectively.

Kritenbrink had a season high 28 kills and now has 497 kills on the season, breaking USD's single season kills mark of 482 set by Kristen Miller in 2005. Kritenbrink also moved into third on South Dakota's (18-11, 9-4) all-time career kills list with 1,366, passing Miller (2002-05) at 1,362. She needs 30 to pass her sister Kristin Kritenbrink for second on the all-time kills list at 1,395.

Melissa Firtko's 18 kills, Kaitlyn Hastings' 27 digs and Tori Kroll's 63 assists were all career highs.

South Dakota had more kills than Omaha in every set and finished with a 79-59 advantage in kills, but finished the match with 21 more attack errors than the Mavericks (39-18). Omaha also controlled the net with a 14-7 blocks advantage.

The Coyotes drop into a tie for second place in the Summit League with Denver after the Pioneers swept Western Illinois on Friday night. Both teams have one league match remaining. Second place will receive a first round bye in the Summit League Tournament.

South Dakota will take on Western Illinois Sunday at 2 p.m. in Macomb, Ill.
