Coyotes, Jaguars close seasons with 1-1 tie

Box Score

Nov. 3, 2013

Final Stats

VERMILLION, S.D.—Freshman Catherine Raster had a first-half goal for IUPUI and South Dakota sophomore Kylee Willer scored on a penalty kick in the second half as the two teams competed to a 1-1 tie Sunday in the season finale for both teams.

The players battled a cross wind with gusts near 30 miles per hour for most of the day. The teams combined for 32 shots and saw several blown off course and sail just wide of the net. The Coyotes put 12 of 15 shots on goal, but couldn't find success against Jaguar goalkeeper Giselle Guzman, who made nine saves.

It was Senior Day and Faculty Appreciation Day at USD Soccer Complex. The Coyotes' two seniors – forward Jenny Teslow and goalkeeper Jen Shaefer – were honored in a pregame ceremony. Shaefer, who started 12 games last season, made her first start of 2013 and faced seven shots in 45 minutes of work. Mackenzie Viktor netted the remaining 65 minutes in goal and made two saves.

Teslow, who saw her season cut short after 11 games with a leg injury, was made an honorary starter and took the first-half kickoff before being replaced by Teagan Eberle and walking off to applause from the home crowd.

Our two seniors have played a large role in pushing this program forward, said USD head coach Mandy Green. They brought so much heart, energy and enthusiasm to our team. It would have been nice to send them off with a win, and we had chances to do that, but we couldn't get one to the net.

Raster scored in the 39th minute by drilling a shot from the top-left corner of the box that powered through the hands of Shaefer and reached the back of the net. It was Raster's second goal of the season.

Willer scored the equalizer in the 56th minute after forward Jamie Karch drew a foul on the right side of the box. Willer's penalty kick was directed into the bottom left corner of the goal with ease. It was the first penalty kick taken by the junior who notched her third collegiate goal.

South Dakota finishes its season with a 6-8-4 record, including a 1-5-1 mark in Summit League play. IUPUI ends with a 5-9-5 record and a 1-4-2 league record.
