VERMILLION, S.D.—Senior guard Chasson Randle scored a game-high 23 points and led four Stanford players who scored in double figures as the Cardinal held off South Dakota 84-73 Sunday in front of a crowd of 5,025 at Maples Pavilion.

It was the first meeting between the two programs and South Dakota's third-ever matchup with a Pac-12 program. The game was part of Northwestern Mutual's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Brandon Bos had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Coyotes (0-2), which trailed 40-26 at halftime, but outscored Stanford 47-44 in the second half. South Dakota closed within six points, 65-59, on two free throws from Sekou Harris with 7:26 to go, but drew no closer down the stretch.

Stanford (2-0) made 38 of 46 free throws compared to 18 of 25 for South Dakota. Randle was 12 of 12 from the charity stripe and 5 of 11 from the field.

Coyote guard Tyler Larson scored 11 points and had five assists and four boards before fouling out with four minutes to go. Harris and redshirt freshman Austin Sparks had nine points apiece. Tre Burnette added eight points.

An NCAA Sweet 16 team a year ago, Stanford outscored the Coyotes 17-6 during the final eight minutes of the first half. Thirteen of those points were earned at the charity stripe. Cardinal forward Rosco Allen scored 11 of his 17 points in the opening stanza. Bos and Sparks had seven first-half points for the Coyotes.

Stefan Nastic had 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists and three blocks for Stanford. Teammate Anthony Brown had 11 points and 10 boards. The Cardinal had a 42-29 advantage on the glass.

The Coyotes shot 39 percent from the field (24 of 61) and made 7 of 19 three-pointers. Bos and Casey Kasperbauer had two triples each. Sparks made 4 of 5 from the field and had two blocked shots.

South Dakota returns to the court Friday at a tournament hosted by Fairfield in Bridgeport, Conn. The Coyotes will take on Sam Houston State, Wofford and Fairfield on consecutive nights.
