PORTLAND, Ore. - Margaret McCloud scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the South Dakota women's basketball team past Portland State 86-57 at the Peter W. Stott Center on Wednesday night.
McCloud scored 16 points in the second half and was 8-for-12 shooting on the night. She upped her previous scoring high of 18 that she scored against Utah State on Dec. 5 of last year. Raeshel Contreras scored 14 points and Nicole Seekamp added 11 points, while Tia Hemiller tallied five assists and six rebounds.
The Vikings (0-2) were led by Mikaela Rivard, who scored 20 points, and Emily Easom, who added 16 points.
The Coyotes (2-1) shot 62 percent (18-29) from the field in the second half and 50.8 percent (32-63) in the game. USD outscored the Vikings 44-24 in the paint, 28-7 in bench points, 25-6 in points off of turnovers and 15-4 in second chance points. USD also held a 44-30 advantage in rebounds.
The Coyotes led from start to finish, were up 38-25 at halftime and had their largest lead of 31 in the second half.
Contreras was USD's top scorer in the first half with 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting. USD forced 11 Viking turnovers in the half and had a 15-0 advantage in points off turnovers. Eight of the nine Coyotes that played during the first 20 minutes recorded at least two points.
After going 0-for-5 from 3-point range in the first half, South Dakota found more of a rhythm from that distance in the second half, going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc. USD also tallied 11 assists on 18 made baskets and committed just five turnovers over the final 20 minutes.
South Dakota will play at Washington on Thursday night. Tipoff is at 9 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcasted on 106.3 KVHT.
