BRIDGEPORT, Conn.—Wofford guard Karl Cochran made eight three-pointers and scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Terriers to a 72-68 win against South Dakota Saturday at Webster Bank Arena.
The contest fell on day two of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by Fairfield University. The 5 p.m. local time tip came 17 hours after the Coyotes' triple overtime loss to Sam Houston State Friday evening. South Dakota concludes the Classic at 1 p.m. Sunday against Fairfield.
Cochran, the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year, made six three-pointers and scored 20 points in the first half in staking Wofford (3-1) to a 40-27 halftime lead. In all, he made 11 of 21 shots including 8 of 14 three-pointers and had seven rebounds.
The Coyotes (0-4) trailed 57-34 at the midway point of the second half and by 18 points with six minutes to go. Adam Thoseby scored 13 of his career-high 18 points in the final 3:36. His layup with a second to go made it 71-68. Eric Garcia's free throw with .3 seconds left secured the win.
Thoseby was the only Coyote to score in double figures. He made 6 of 13 from the floor including three triples. All 12 South Dakota players who took the court Saturday logged double-digit minutes. The Coyotes' bench, which included Thoseby, scored 47 of the team's 68 points.
