Alive after five! Coyotes drop Pioneers 3-2

Box Score Nov. 7, 2014

Final Stats

VERMILLION, S.D. - Kendall Kritenbrink recorded five of her 16 kills in the deciding set and was one of three Coyotes to record double-doubles as South Dakota volleyball upped its home winning streak versus Summit League opponents to 16 by topping Denver 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 15-10 on Friday night in The Den.

Denver (21-6, 10-3) entered the match in first place in the Summit League standings. Both teams are now 10-3 in league play and are one loss behind IUPUI (16-11, 10-2) in the league race. The Coyotes (16-10, 10-3) host IUPUI on Nov. 16 and will be the top seed in the Summit League Tournament if they win their last three matches of the season.

Kritenbrink, who added a block and a service ace to her five-kill effort in the fifth set, recorded her 15th double-double of the season by adding 14 digs to her 16 kill effort. Audrey Reeg and Sydney Dime also had double-doubles. Reeg tallied a season high 26 digs along with 10 kills and Dimke recorded a career high 14 digs to go with 13 kills.

Libero Riley Haug also had a season high effort in digs with 27, Brittany Jessen had 51 assists and Melissa Firtko had seven total blocks.

Denver was led offensively by Sarah Schmid and Nola Basey with 16 kills each. Cassidy Rooke had 20 digs, Bailey Karst had 46 assists and Erica Denney tallied seven total blocks.

The Coyotes were out-killed by the Pioneers in only the fourth set (18-8) and received 12 points in the match off of Denver serving errors.

Denver took set one behind four kills from Basey and three kills from Ruth Okoye. Nine Coyote attack errors negated a 17-14 advantage in kills for USD during the set. Denver scored seven of the set's last 10 points with five of those coming off of kills.

South Dakota evened the score in set two behind five kills from Dimke. Both South Dakota and Denver had 14 kills in the set, but USD held a 3-0 advantage in aces. Reeg and Haug both had their best defensive numbers of the night during that set, finishing with eight digs and seven digs respectively.

USD forced Denver into nine attack errors in set three and finished on a 9-3 run. Seven of those nine points came off of Denver errors. Firtko was USD's lead attacker in the set with four kills while Haug recorded six digs.

The Pioneers turned the tables in set four to send the match into a fifth set. Denver tallied 18 kills while holding the Coyotes to just eight kills in the frame. Moni Corrujedo tallied six of her 15 kills during the set while Basey added three kills to lead the Pioneers.

South Dakota responded by running away with set five. The Coyotes scored 10 of the first 13 points in the deciding set and led by as many as eight (14-6). The Coyotes also had 10 kills to just two attack errors during the set. Kritenbrink tallied her five kills on nine attacks, while Dimke added a pair of kills to lead the USD effort.

The Coyotes will travel to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois (5-20, 3-9) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
