Coyotes take Creighton into double overtime in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb.--Creighton junior guard James Milliken came off the bench and scored a career-high 23 points, eight of which came in the final overtime, as the Bluejays pulled out a 91-88 double-overtime victory against South Dakota Tuesday before 16,270 fans at the CenturyLink Center.

Creighton (8-2) ran its home winning streak to 24 games, but got all it wanted from a Coyote team that led by 10 points in the first half, three points at halftime and hit three-pointers at the end of both regulation and the first overtime to extend the game.

South Dakota senior guard Tyler Larson scored a career-high 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Larson hit a three-pointer as time expired at the end of regulation that tied the game at 65-65. The Coyotes had trailed 58-49 with three minutes left in the second half.

Creighton led by seven points, 74-67, with three minutes to go in the first overtime. Larson hit his third 3-pointer, Brandon Bos got a steal and converted a three-point play, and Trey Norris hit a triple with 34 seconds left that tied the game at 76-76. Creighton guard Austin Chatman missed a long jumper on the final possession of the first overtime.

The Coyotes (3-7) took a 78-77 lead with two free throws by Larson with 3:11 remaining. Milliken answered with a three-pointer and hit a long jumper on the next possession to give Creighton an 82-78 advantage. After Bos made two free throws to make it 82-80, Milliken drilled his fourth 3 of the game that made it 85-80.

Bos hit a 3 with 7.9 seconds left that closed Creighton's lead to 88-85. Chatman was immediately fouled and made two free throws that made it 90-85. Bos hit another three-pointer with two seconds left that made it 90-88. Bos was 4 of 8 from long distance, 9 of 9 from the free-throw line and had 23 points.

Chatman was fouled with 0.9 seconds remaining. He missed the first free throw and made the second for a 91-88 lead. The Coyotes long pass into the front court was intercepted and time expired.

Chatman scored all 24 of his points in the second half and overtime periods. He was 4 of 13 from the field, but made 14 of 16 free throws. He also had eight assists.

South Dakota junior guard Tre Burnette scored a season-high 24 points, finished with 10 rebounds and was the difference maker early. Burnette scored 11 points in the first six minutes as the Coyotes sprinted to a 15-5 lead. The Coyotes led nearly the entire first half. Burnette had 16 points by halftime and the Coyotes led 28-25 at the break.

Creighton erased the deficit and took its first lead of the second half at the 14:38 mark on a bucket by Milliken. South Dakota led 45-43 with eight minutes to go. A 15-4 run by the Bluejays gave them their largest lead at 58-49.

Both teams made 11 three-pointers. South Dakota outrebounded Creighton 42-41. The Coyotes made 19 of 22 free throws and the Bluejays made 26 of 35.

South Dakota returns to the court Saturday at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls where the Coyotes will take on UNLV (5-2). Start time is 7 p.m.
