VERMILLION, S.D.—Youngstown State senior forward Shawn Amiker scored 22 points and added 12 rebounds to lead the Penguins to an 87-79 win against South Dakota Friday night inside the DakotaDome.
The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Coyotes (3-6), who were playing at home for the second time this season. South Dakota takes on Creighton Tuesday in Omaha.
Amiker made 8 of 12 shots and 6 of 7 free throws. With his team leading 79-76 with 47 seconds left, he rebounded a missed free throw by teammate D.J. Cole, scored on a put back and was fouled. His free throw made it a six-point game.
South Dakota trailed by 15 points early in the second half, but closed within three points four times during the final three minutes. Youngstown State (6-4) never gave the Coyotes a chance at a game-tying possession.
Tyler Larson scored 21 points and had nine rebounds and five assists. Teammates Brandon Bos and Casey Kasperbauer added 18 points each. The guard trio combined to make 12 of 20 three-point attempts and for 21 of the Coyotes' 37 rebounds.
Marcus Keene had four of the Penguins' seven triples and finished with 18 points. He answered a Kasperbauer 3 with one of his own with 1:55 to go that gave Youngstown State a 79-73 lead. Bobby Hain did his work in the paint, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Youngstown State shot 53 percent from the field (32 of 60) and made more free throws (16) than the Coyotes attempted (15). South Dakota made 13 of 28 three-pointers and 15 of 40 two-point tries.
Kasperbauer has made 16 of 28 three-point attempts and averaged 20.3 points in his last three games. He leads the Summit League with 24 made three-pointers.
