VERMILLION, S.D.—Oral Roberts erased a 10-point halftime deficit and survived two close-range shots in the final seconds to defeat South Dakota 73-72 Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
Obi Emegano scored a game-high 24 points and Denell Henderson added 14 more, including two free throws with 23 seconds left that became the final points of the game to lead the Golden Eagles (12-10, 5-3 Summit). Brandon Bos and Casey Kasperbauer had 16 points each to pace the Coyotes (10-13, 4-5).
Oral Roberts trailed 39-29 at the half and 57-46 near the midway point of the second half. The Golden Eagles tied the game for the first time at 65-65 on two free throws by Emegano. They took the first lead of the game with 2:34 remaining on two free throws by Henderson, who made all eight tries for the charity stripe.
South Dakota entered as one of the nation's top free-throw shooting teams, but missed 11 of 33 attempts Saturday. Oral Roberts was 19 of 26.
Eric Robertson made two free throws with 36 seconds left that gave South Dakota a 72-71 lead. He was whistled for a blocking foul on Henderson on the ensuing possession and Henderson put the Golden Eagles back in front.
Coyote point guard Trey Norris had a layup in the lane partially deflected by Henderson with nine seconds left. The Coyotes fouled Korey Billbury with eight seconds left.
Billbury missed both free throws and Tyler Larson pulled down his 11th rebound for South Dakota. Larson sprinted up court and drove into Henderson in the lane as his layup missed the mark. Emegano secured the rebound and time expired.
Billbury had eight points and 10 boards for Oral Roberts. Albert Owens came off the bench to score 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Robertson had 10 points off the bench for South Dakota. Tre Burnette had 10 points and Larson added eight.
It was the first meeting between the two teams since Dec. 30, 2011. Oral Roberts has won all five games in the series.
South Dakota will try to end a three-game skid Thursday at home against Western Illinois.
