VERMILLION, S.D.— Four Coyotes had double-digit kills as South Dakota (7-11, 1-4 SL) came from behind to knock off Oral Roberts (10-9, 4-2) 25-11, 22-25, 14-25, 25-23, 15-8 to get its first conference win on Sunday in the Coyotes Den.
"This win was very exciting," said South Dakota head coach
Leanne Williamson. "It was a total team effort as we had multiple hitters with double-digit kills, and
Brittany Jessen did a great job running our offense.
"I was also impressed with
Haley Jorgensen. She proved that she could contribute both offensively and defensively. This win helps us show what we are capable of. It takes the full team to win a match, and I'm proud of the fight that we displayed."
Junior
Audrey Reeg recorded a double-double as she led the Coyotes with 19 kills and added 11 digs while classmate
Haley Jorgensen had a career-high 12 kills and six block assists.
Senior
Kelsey Biltoft and freshman
Hayley Dotseth each contributed 11 kills for South Dakota.
Sophomore setter
Brittany Jessen had a double-double with 52 assists and 15 digs, and freshman libero
Lauren Mattison had 21 digs.
South Dakota had an early lead in the first set and was up 16-5 as Reeg swatted down five kills and four Coyotes added one more apiece. The great start helped propel the Coyotes to a first set blowout.
In the second set, there were a total of 21 ties/lead changes. With the score tied up at 20, the Golden Eagles went on a 5-2 run with three kills from Laura Milos and Oral Roberts won set two. That momentum from set two would carry into set three as the Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Coyotes bounced back in set four, which neither team led by more than four. With the score tied at 19, South Dakota went on a 6-4 run as Biltoft had two kills and Jorgensen and Dotseth added one apiece to push the match to a fifth and final set.
With the score tied at 6, the Coyotes scored five straight points with Reeg and Jessen each recording a kill as South Dakota outlasted Oral Roberts.
Milos led Oral Roberts with 25 kills, Lucija Bojanjac kept the offense going with a match-high 54 assists, and Tori Roe added 17 digs to protect the backline.
South Dakota is back in action on Tuesday as the team travels to Brookings, S.D., to take on South Dakota State at 7 p.m.
