VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota State junior Zach Lujan quarterbacked two fourth quarter touchdown drives and teammate Nick Farina returned an interception 43 yards for a score to lead the fifth-ranked Jackrabbits to a come-from-behind, 30-23 win against South Dakota Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
It was the 110
th meeting between the two rivals. SDSU (8-2, 5-2 MVFC) has won the last seven meetings to take its first lead in the series at 52-51-7. The Jacks have won all four meetings at the FCS level and the last five contested inside the DakotaDome.
Lujan replaced freshman starter Taryn Christion on the final play of the third quarter with South Dakota holding a 20-10 lead. He completed 6 of 7 passes for 128 yards on scoring drives that spanned 65 and 88 yards. Three of the completions went to sophomore wide out Jake Wieneke for 81 yards. Kyle Paris finished both drives with a 2-yard touchdown run and the Jacks led 24-20 with 8:43 remaining.
Three plays into South Dakota's next drive, Farina, the free safety, stepped in front of a
Ryan Saeger pass and went untouched down the sideline to make it 30-20. The extra point was missed, but the Jacks had scored 20 consecutive points in less than seven minutes to take control. It was the second interception of the season for Farina.
South Dakota (5-5, 3-4) cut the lead to seven on a 45-yard field goal from
Miles Bergner with 3:41 remaining. It was Bergner's third long field goal of the game. He connected from 50 and 45 yards near the end of the third quarter to give the Coyotes a 20-10 advantage.
The Coyote defense forced a 3-and-out and Brady Hale boomed a 50-yard punt that was caught at the USD 8 with 1:55 remaining. South Dakota moved to the SDSU 43 and faced 4
th-and-1 with nine seconds remaining. Saeger's long throw to the end zone was batted down by Wieneke.
Saeger completed 26 of 46 passes for 266 yards. He threw a 40-yard touchdown to
Brandt Van Roekel for the first score of the game with 8:41 left in the first quarter. He also snuck in from a yard away to cap the opening drive of the second half. The score put the Coyotes in front 14-10 with 10:06 to go in the third.
Christion was 9 of 19 for 153 yards before being replaced by Lujan. Christion's 10-yard touchdown run put the Jacks in front 10-7 five minutes into the second quarter, but he netted just seven yards rushing. He was also intercepted by
John Wessel late in the third quarter which led to Bergner's third field goal.
South Dakota outgained SDSU on the ground 172-93 and overall 438-374. Coyote true freshman running back
Michael Fredrick carried 31 times for a career-high 143 yards. He and Saeger accounted for all 39 rushes.
Wieneke caught six passes for 180 yards. Tight end Dallas Goedert totaled 63 yards on two catches for the Jacks. His counterpart,
Aaron Ramsey, led the Coyotes with 81 yards on four catches. Van Roekel caught five passes for 65 yards.
South Dakota wraps up the regular season in Normal, Ill., next Saturday with a noon tilt against sixth-ranked Illinois State (8-2, 6-1), a 42-21 winner against Southern Illinois Saturday in Carbondale, Ill.
