Kansas State pulls away in the second half

MBB: KSU 93, USD 72

MANHATTAN, Kan.—Kansas State freshman Barry Brown came off the bench and scored 13 of his season-high 18 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats to a 93-72 win against South Dakota Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
 
The win keeps Kansas State unbeaten at 3-0. The Coyotes fell to 1-3.
 
South Dakota point guard Shy McClelland's season-high 20 points led all scorers. He had 14 points in the first half to help the Coyotes take a 42-39 lead into the break. South Dakota's largest lead was 33-25 following two free throws by McClelland with 4:09 to go in the first. He made the first four shots he took and finished 7 of 11 from the field.
 
Kansas State made 14 free throws in the first half to stay within striking distance, then made 22 more in the second half while pulling away. The Wildcats made 36 of 45 free throws compared to 9 of 14 for South Dakota.
 
Brown scored the final eight points of a 23-7 run that saw Kansas State turn a 49-45 deficit with 18 minutes left into a 68-56 lead near the midway point of the second half. He made 5 of 10 shots from the field and was 6 of 7 from the free-throw line.
 
Dean Wade, Stephen Hurt and Justin Edwards scored 15 points apiece for Kansas State, which shot 55 percent in the second half after a 11 of 32 effort in the first. Wade and Edwards added a game-high eight rebounds each. The Wildcats scored 16 points off 15 offensive rebounds and won the battle of the boards 43-34.
 
South Dakota freshman Dan Jech contributed a season-high 13 points on 6 of 10 shooting in 20 minutes off the bench. Trey Norris played 28 minutes off the Coyote bench. He had eight points, six assists and a career-best six rebounds.
 
The Coyotes led during the final 13 minutes of the first half up until the 16:12 mark of the second. South Dakota made 16 of 30 shots in the opening half including four 3-pointers. The Coyotes were 3 of 14 from long range in the second half and shot 43 percent (28 of 65) for the game.
 
The game was a rematch of a 64-62 Kansas State win in Manhattan two years ago. The Wildcats have won all 10 games of the series, which dates back to the 1977-78 season. All 10 games have been played in Manhattan.
 
South Dakota will play its home opener at 7 p.m. Tuesday against South Dakota Mines.
