VERMILLION, S.D.—Casey Kasperbauer made five 3-pointers and Tre Burnette had 10 points and 11 rebounds as South Dakota beat Avila 84-60 in a non-conference game inside the DakotaDome Tuesday. It was the first-ever matchup between the two programs.
The win gets the Coyotes (14-14) back to .500 for the third time this season. It was the start of a four-game homestand for South Dakota which hosts IUPUI Saturday at 2 p.m.
Tyler Larson scored 12 points and Brandon Bos added 10 for the Coyotes, who had all 12 roster-eligible players score on the night. South Dakota out-rebounded its undersized opponent 49-17 and turned in 31 second-chance points. The Coyotes had more offensive rebounds (21) than Avila had total rebounds (17).
D'Vante Lewis made all six shots he took from the field and made 3 of 3 from the free-throw line in leading Avila (13-12) with 15 points. Nduka Ezeamil added 13 points. Avila, an NAIA Division I program from Kansas City, Mo., had all 12 of its players finish with double-digit minutes in what was an exhibition game for the team.
Kasperbauer capped four consecutive fast-break possessions with long 3-pointers just past the midway point of the first half. His 12 points came in a span of 1:23 and they gave USD a 28-17 lead.
Burnette hit South Dakota's seventh triple of the first half near the horn and the Coyotes led 43-29 at the break. Burnette had as many rebounds in the first half (8) as Avila had as a team. He got his fourth double-double of the season in 19 minutes of work.
Sekou Harris came off the Coyote bench and set career highs with nine assists and seven rebounds. He also scored five points. South Dakota handed out a season-high 20 assists as a team. Harris' total is the most by a Coyote this season.
South Dakota made 31 of 61 shots for 50.8 percent and knocked down 12 of 26 three-point tries. It was the second consecutive game that the Coyotes shot better than 50 percent from the field.
