NASHVILLE, Tenn.—South Dakota exchanged a pair of shutouts on day two of the Music City Classic co-hosted by Belmont University and Lipscomb University. Georgetown stopped the Coyotes 8-0 in game one. South Dakota responded with a 9-0 win against Belmont in game two.
The Coyotes are 1-2 on their opening weekend with an 11 a.m. game against Kansas City remaining on Sunday.
Georgetown pitcher Megan Hyson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth inning and hit a grand slam as part of a six-run sixth inning for the Hoyas that gave them an 8-0 lead. Samantha Giovanniello also homered for Georgetown (2-0), which out-hit the Coyotes 10-3. Brooke Curtis had a double and drew a walk in two plate appearances for South Dakota.
Coyote pitcher Rachel Cue (1-1) threw a one-hit shutout against Belmont (0-2). A two-out double by Taylor Hodge in the fifth and final inning was her only blemish. Cue walked three and struck out three while earning her seventh collegiate shutout.
Junior left fielder Katie Cochran hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth for South Dakota. It was part of a 3-for-3 effort for Cochran who also doubled and drove in three runs. Matley Jones hit a solo home run in the first inning. It was Jones' second home run in as many days at the Classic.
South Dakota posted 10 hits against the Bruins and has totaled 17 runs in three games at the Classic. Cochran and Yvon Minogue lead the team with four hits. Cochran has six RBIs. Minogue has hit safely in all three games.
