VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota seniors
Elena Tsakakis and
Rebecca Sparkman scored the Coyotes' first goals of the regular season as South Dakota fell to Drake 6-2 Thursday at USD Soccer Complex.
Junior
Corey Strang started the first Coyote scoring play in the 85th minute by flicking the ball to senior
Danielle Anderson. Anderson took two touches forward and played the ball across the top of the goalbox line to Tsakakis. Tsakakis crushed the ball into the bottom of the net for the Coyotes' first goal of the season.
Then in the 89th minute, Anderson fed the ball through two defenders to Sparkman inside the box. Sparkman sent the ball past the keeper to the bottom left corner of the goal to finalize the score at 6-2.
Drake (2-1-0) had six different players each score a goal in the win. Alyssa Brand and Emma Winstead put the Bulldogs up by two in the first half. Rebecca Rogers, Vanessa Kavan, Mariah Boncek, and Gabby Charles added to the total in the second half.
South Dakota (0-3-0) had nine of its 11 shots during the second half. Drake also had 11 shots during the match.
The Coyotes travel to Grand Forks, N.D., to take on North Dakota at 1 p.m. Sunday.
