VERMILLION, S.D.—Sammy Arellano came off the bench in both halves and scored two goals to lead UC Riverside to a 2-0 win against South Dakota Friday at USD Soccer Complex.
The win ended a three-game skid for the Highlanders (5-5-0), who continue their tour of the Dakotas Sunday morning against North Dakota State in Fargo. South Dakota (3-8-0) is 1-1 halfway through a season-long four-game home stand.
Arellano netted her first goals of the season with precision strikes to the top of the goal. She gathered a rebound near the top of the box in the 25th minute and fired a shot to the high-right side of the goal for her first score. She struck again in the 77th minute with a shot to the top shelf from 20 yards away.
Riverside goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas made five saves, two of which came on 1-on-1 matchups with Coyote forwards. She faced eight shots in all. The Highlanders put five of 16 shots on goal.
South Dakota begins its eight-game Summit League slate at home next Friday against Oral Roberts.
