VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota freshman Sammie Villwock scored a hat trick to lead the Coyotes to a 4-3 overtime win against Green Bay at USD Soccer Complex on Sunday.

Green Bay (1-4-0) took the lead early as Heidi Hartmann beat the last defender and scored in the seventh minute. Hartmann sent the ball to the left corner of the net as Coyote goalkeeper Sydney Hardin came out to defend.

South Dakota (2-4-0) answered in the 28th minute as Villwock dropped the ball to junior Corey Strang just outside the goal box. Strang took a shot right off the rolling ball and sent it to the far side of the net. The Coyotes and the Phoenix entered halftime in a 1-1 tie.

In the 60th minute, a series of quick passes by the Coyote midfield led to South Dakota taking the lead. Senior Danielle Anderson started the play with a pass from the middle to Strang. Strang sent the ball out to the flank where senior Taylor Nivala took two touches before crossing it back in. Villwock was on the receiving end with a header in for the first of her three goals.

Villwock responded again five minutes later as she dribbled up the field and put the ball into the goal and out of Phoenix goalkeeper Kelly Kent's reach.

In the 75th minute, Green Bay's Jessica Robert's shot was deflected off a Coyote defender to teammate Leah Nitardy. Nitardy scored off the rebound with a shot to the left side of the net.

The Phoenix responded again in the 77th minute as Nicole Piette crossed the ball in front of the net from the right flank. Hartmann connected to score her second goal of the match.

After regulation ended with a 3-3 tie, the Coyotes and Phoenix entered overtime with the golden goal rule in effect.

Dribbling up the center of the field in the 92nd minute, Anderson sent the ball out left to Villwock. With a Phoenix defender approaching from the outside, Villwock took a quick left footed shot and sent it into the back of the net for the win.

South Dakota outshot Green Bay 19-11.

Kent pulled down eight saves for the Phoenix, while the Green Bay defense deflected one more.

In goal for the Coyotes, Hardin grabbed four saves. South Dakota's defense added two more blocked shots.

South Dakota travels to Edinburg, Texas, next weekend for matchups against Texas Rio Grande Valley and Southern Utah.
