BROOKINGS, S.D.—South Dakota senior guard
Nicole Seekamp drilled a three-pointer with 15 seconds left to steal away a road win 63-58 for the Coyotes over rival South Dakota State inside Frost Arena on Sunday afternoon.
South Dakota (13-5, 4-1 Summit) won for the first time inside Frost Arena in a quarter century. The Coyotes' win not only ended a 20-game skid dating back to 1990 inside Frost Arena, but it ended South Dakota State's (14-4, 4-1) 12-game winning streak against league opponents.
"What a gritty performance," commented head coach
Amy Williams. "Every time South Dakota State took the lead and the momentum started to shift, we had a player come down here and make a big play. I'm happy the seniors, who have been handed a lot of defeats here in Brookings, get to walk away with a win."
It was a tough defensive match-up that limited both teams to shooting under 40 percent and committing more than 15 turnovers.
Seekamp scored 19 of her game-high 23 points in the second half. Although the Coyotes trailed by seven headed into halftime, she erased the gap with her own 6-0 run in less than a minute time span. Her run was bookended with assists to centers
Margaret McCloud and
Kate Liveringhouse for easy layups. Seekamp totaled seven assists on the night.
The Jackrabbits were led by guard Macy Miller with 20 points. Center Clarissa Ober and guard Madison Guebert added 10 points apiece. Five of Guebert's points came on the Jackrabbits' 12-0 run at the end of the second quarter to take a halftime lead. Ober stuffed the Coyotes with a career high eight blocks.
Senior guard
Kelly Stewart added 13 points for the Coyotes on 4-for-7 shooting. She had two of the Coyotes' five triples on the night, including the 3-point field goal at the beginning of the final quarter to tie it up at 40. Stewart added five rebounds and three steals.
With two fouls in opening minutes, McCloud's time on the court was limited Sunday. She was 2-for-2 from the field for four total points, grabbed two boards, and handed out two assists. Off the bench, Liveringhouse totaled seven points and two rebounds.
Senior guard
Tia Hemiller also had seven points.
South Dakota outrebounded South Dakota State 38-35 with boards spread across the Coyotes' roster. Junior guard
Caitlin Duffy grabbed a team-high six off the glass. South Dakota State forward Ellie Thompson led the Jackrabbits on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Jackrabbits committed 19 turnovers, six higher than their average, during the game. South Dakota scored 22 points off the turnovers.
The Coyotes also had 10 fast break points while limiting the Jackrabbits to none.
