VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota senior guard
Nicole Seekamp moved into second all-time for career points after scoring 19 tonight in the Coyotes' 92-60 win over Fort Wayne inside the DakotaDome.
South Dakota (14-5, 5-1 Summit) remains tied for first place in the league standings with the win. Fort Wayne (4-15, 0-6 Summit) has lost nine in a row.
"Fort Wayne leads the league in forced turnovers and right above us in steals per game," head coach
Amy Williams said. "Tonight, they had one steal while we had 25 assists and eight turnovers. I thought we did a great job of attacking their different defenses without turning the ball over."
Seekamp hit a 3-point field goal with 2:17 remaining in the third quarter to reach 1,762 career points. Seekamp moves past Amber Hegge on the all-time charts, while only Mandy Koupal has scored more in her Coyote career with 2,142.
Seekamp registered her fourth consecutive double-digit scoring game by making 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from three. She added five assists, two steals, and no turnovers on the night.
South Dakota was up 49-29 at the half before extending the lead to 32. It's the largest point differential in league play for the Yotes.
Senior guards
Kelly Stewart and
Tia Hemiller both scored 11 points. Stewart grabbed six off the glass, including four offensive boards. Hemiller dished out six assists and shot a perfect 3-for-3 in the first quarter. It was Hemiller's 13th double-digit game this season.
Junior guard
Jasmine Trimboli shot 3-for-5 from the field for eight points, while tying her season-bests for rebounds and assists with five each.
Fort Wayne guard Courtney Ogle sparked the Mastodons off the bench with a team-high 15 points. Ogle tied her career high five 3-pointers after hitting a trio of 3-point field goals during a three-minute span at the beginning of the second quarter.
Mastodon forward Keanna Gary, guard Kamilah Carter, and guard Rachel Rinehart all finished with 11 points. Rinehart added five assists.
Centers senior
Margaret McCloud and sophomore
Kate Liveringhouse combined for 15 points. The Coyotes were able to get entry passes between the blocks, outscoring the Dons 36-16 in the paint. South Dakota also won the rebounding battle 37-28. The Coyotes' 16 offensive boards led to 23 second-chance points.
The Mastodons shot 58.8 percent (10-of-17) outside the 3-point arc, the best percentage an opponent has put up against the Coyotes this season.
South Dakota made 34-of-64 shots for 53.1 percent from the field. The Coyotes shot 45.8 percent (11-of-24) outside the 3-point line. It was just the third win this season where the Coyotes won after shooting more than 70 percent from the charity stripe (13-of-18).
The Coyotes face IUPUI at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, who dropped to fourth in the league after a double-overtime 68-66 loss at South Dakota State tonight.
