VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota State redshirt freshman Mike Daum tied his season high of 23 points and Jake Bittle added 21 more to lead the Jacks to a 79-75 win against South Dakota Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
It was the 216
th meeting between the two in-state rivals and most likely the final one ever played inside the DakotaDome. South Dakota State (16-5, 5-2 Summit) won 12 of the 30 meetings played in the facility, which opened in 1979. It was the Jacks' second win in Vermillion in their last seven tries.
South Dakota (10-11, 2-5) got 14 points from
Casey Kasperbauer, 12 from
Trey Norris and 10 each from
D.J. Davis and
Tyler Flack.
Tre Burnette added nine points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Coyotes led 30-19 with 2:30 remaining in the first half after SDSU began the game 4 of 19 from the field. Jacks' point guard George Marshall scored seven straight points on three jumpers and made two free throws on SDSU's final possession of the stanza to cut South Dakota's lead to 32-28.
In all, it became a 25-6 run that started at the end of the first half and extended through the first four minutes of the second giving SDSU a 44-36 lead. Nine of Marshall's 10 points came in that time. The Jacks made 8 of 11 shots including four 3-pointers. South Dakota, meanwhile, made 1 of 7.
Norris scored four points during an 8-0 run to get South Dakota back within one and Burnette buried a 3 to tie the game at 51-51 with 11:26 left. It was just the third 3 of the game for South Dakota and the Coyotes would finish 4 of 13 from long range. SDSU made 9 of 20.
Bittle and Daum combined for 30 points in the second half on 8 of 12 shooting, and it was their performances down the stretch that made the difference. Daum, who had made 12 triples all season, was 4 of 4 from downtown in the second half. None were bigger than the one he hit with 2:11 to go that gave SDSU a 74-69 lead. Bittle had broken a tie two possessions earlier with a score. Keaton Moffitt added a layup with 1:40 left that made it 76-69.
Flack's dunk on a putback from a missed 3 closed the gap to 76-73 with 48 seconds left. Moffitt made two free throws for SDSU and Flack made two on the other end that made it 78-75 with 25 ticks left. Bittle made 1 of 2 free throws with 22 seconds left for the final points of the game.
The game drew 58 whistles and both teams took 37 free throws. South Dakota made 25 to SDSU's 24. Kasperbauer, the nation's leading free-throw shooter, was 6 of 6 and has made 36 in a row dating back to late November.
World Record Attempt Nets $1,900 South Dakota cheerleader Carrie Wintle did not break the Guiness Book of World Records for the most T-shirts put on in one minute Saturday. She put on 19 which raised $1,900 to Feeding South Dakota from South Dakota Corn.
