TULSA, Okla.—South Dakota head coach
Craig Smith changed his lineup for the first time this season and it proved effective in his Coyotes' 94-84 win at Oral Roberts Sunday inside the Mabee Center.
USD guards
Shy McClelland and
D.J. Davis came off the bench for the first time this season and played critical roles in helping the Coyotes (9-7, 1-1 Summit) avoid an 0-2 start to the conference slate. McClelland scored 18 points and had six steals, five boards and four assists. Davis scored 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting and handed out a career-high six assists.
South Dakota placed five in double figures as
Tre Burnette scored a game-high 22 points and
Casey Kasperbauer added 20.
Eric Robertson finished with 10.
The Coyotes took advantage of an Oral Roberts team that competed without the Summit League's leading scorer in guard Obi Emegano due to a concussion suffered earlier in the week. Emegano is averaging 23.5 points per game.
Without his services, the Golden Eagles (8-8, 0-2) committed 22 turnovers that led to 36 South Dakota points. DaQuan Jeffries came off the bench and led Oral Roberts with 16 points. Kris Martin had 15, Aaron Anderson finished with 13 and Aaron Young pitched in 12.
Both teams shot around 52 percent, but the turnovers were the difference. Oral Roberts committed 11 in each half and South Dakota's 14 steals were a season high. The Coyotes turned it over 10 times.
McClelland scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half to help the Coyotes rebound from a 44-42 halftime deficit. McClelland, who started the second half, and Burnette scored six points each during an 18-4 run out of the break that put USD ahead 60-48. The Coyotes trailed by no less than eight points and by as many as 16 points the rest of the way.
Burnette and Kasperbauer scored 20 points for the third time this season. Kasperbauer made three of USD's eight 3-pointers to move into a tie for sixth place on the Coyotes' all-time 3-point list with 229. He was 7 of 7 from the free-throw line Sunday and has made 27 in a row dating back to late November.
True freshman
Tyler Hagedorn earned his first collegiate start and scored six points and had four rebounds in 14 minutes of work for USD. Senior guard
Trey Norris, traditionally the Coyotes' sixth man, earned his first start since the 2013-14 campaign. He has two points and an assist in 20 minutes.
South Dakota improved to 4-4 in true road games this season. The Coyotes next compete against Fort Wayne (12-4, 1-0) Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT in Fort Wayne, Ind.
