The Game
South Dakota and South Dakota State are set for the latest installment of a rivalry that dates back to 1889. The Jacks have won the last seven meetings dating back to 2000 and have taken the lead in the series for the first time at 52-51-7. The teams are meeting as Valley foes for the fifth time.
Â
The Coyotes need two wins to get to 6-5 and have a realistic chance at an FCS playoff bid. To get there, they will have to beat the best as SDSU and next week's opponent, NDSU, stand atop the Valley standings with 5-1 records. South Dakota has followed a three-game winning streak with back-to-back losses to Western Illinois (35-34) and Southern Illinois (35-28).
Â
South Dakota State, No. 12 in this week's Coaches Poll, rebounded from a slip up at Illinois State two weeks ago by beating Missouri State 49-24 last weekend. The Jacks feature one of the top offenses in the nation led by 1,000-yard receivers Jake Wieneke and tight end Dallas Goedert.
Â
The Quarterbacks
Both starting quarterbacks have been the focal point of their respective offenses all season. Coyote starter
Chris Streveler is the Valley's second-leading rusher and sixth-leading passer. He has reached 100 yards rushing five times in eight games this season, which is one more than what USD quarterbacks combined to total from 2006-15. He's averaging 193 yards passing with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Â
On the other side is sophomore Taryn Christion, who was replaced in last year's rivalry game with his team trailing USD 20-10 thru three quarters. He's rebounded this season to lead the Valley in all things passing. He's the nation's sixth-leading passer at 320 yards per game and his 27 touchdown passes rank fourth nationally. He's also a capable runner. Christion passed for 303 yards and ran for 141 in the Jacks' win at North Dakota State earlier this season.
Â
Defending Wieneke, Goedert
This week will be the third in a row that USD will face an efficient passing game. Western Illinois passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns in its one-point win against USD two weeks ago. Southern Illinois netted 340 yards and two scores thru the air last week in a seven-point win. The Coyotes totaled one sack and an interception in those two games. Last week was the first time this season that USD didn't come away with a pick against an FCS opponent.
Â
Wieneke and Goedert are both enjoying All-American seasons. In nine games, the duo has combined for 129 catches for 2,073 yards and 24 touchdowns. The rest of the Jacks collectively have 87 catches for 882 yards and five scores. Coyote receivers total 156 catches for 1,878 yards and 22 scores. To balance the two, Christion will hand off to Brady Mengarelli (479 yds, 3 TDs) and Isaac Wallace (370 yds, 3 TDs).
Â
Defending the Yotes
The Coyotes look to match the Jacks with an up-tempo offense that averages two minutes for their touchdown drives and runs a play every 18 seconds on average. The read-option run game includes senior
Trevor Bouma (643 yds, 4 TDs), who returns to the series for the first time since his freshman season, and sophomore
Michael Fredrick (256 yds, 2 TDs) who totaled 69 yards on seven carries and a touchdown last week against Southern Illinois.
Â
Streveler shares the ball considerably better than his counterpart. Four different Coyote receivers have posted 100-yard games this season and nine Coyotes have between 10-20 catches. Junior
Alonge Brooks had six catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns last week to put him atop the team's receiving numbers.
Brandt Van Roekel,
Tacari Carpenter and
Riley Donovan have all reached the century mark in games this season.
Â
One Last Thing
At this point, no matter which team starts fast and builds a lead, it should be assumed that this game will be decided in the final two minutes (at least if you're a Coyote fan). Seven of South Dakota's last eight games have been decided in the final 80 seconds. Five were decided on the final play of the game and three were determined in double overtime.
