ESTERO, Fla.—Deron Powers scored a game-high 18 points and teammate Rokas Gustys had 10 points and a staggering 25 rebounds to lead Hofstra to a 65-57 win against South Dakota in the third place game of the Gulf Coast Showcase Wednesday inside Germain Arena.
South Dakota got 15 points from
Tyler Flack and 13 from
Trey Dickerson, but shot a season-low 30 percent from the field in falling to 5-2. The Coyotes return to Vermillion to host Montana at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
Gustys' 25 rebounds is an NCAA Division I high this season. It is the sixth-highest tally in Hofstra history and a single-game Gulf Coast Showcase record.
The Pride (3-3) led 31-28 at the half and never trailed from there. The Coyotes went more than five minutes without a field goal early in the second stanza and trailed 47-34 with 13:30 remaining.
South Dakota crawled within four points, 52-48, with 6:26 left on a bucket by
Trey Burch-Manning, who had six points. But another five-minute drought without a field goal sealed the Coyotes' fate. Hofstra went 10 for 10 from the free-throw line in the game's final 96 seconds to secure the victory.
Flack hit 6 of 12 shots from the field and has reached double figures in his last 10 games dating back to last season. He also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Matt Mooney was the third Coyote to score in double figures. He had 12 points, four assists and two steals.
