Jacks score late to beat Yotes in Brookings

MBB: SDSU 73, USD 72

BROOKINGS, S.D.—South Dakota State got a game-high 30 points from Mike Daum, including the go-ahead bucket with 2.8 seconds left to give the Jacks a 73-72 win against South Dakota Saturday inside Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits (8-9, 1-1 Summit) rebounded from Wednesday's loss to North Dakota State that ended their 34-game home winning streak and improved to 10-0 inside Frost against South Dakota since 2000.

Daum was the only SDSU player to score a field goal in the game's final 10 minutes. When he bulled his way to the hoop for the final score, it was the Jacks' first field goal in more than six minutes. Instead, SDSU made 15 free throws in the second half and were 22 of 27 from the line overall.

South Dakota (10-6, 1-1) played without starting center Tyler Flack and went 8 for 30 from downtown against SDSU's zone defense. The Coyotes were 1 of 16 in the first half from beyond the arc and trailed 35-27 at the break.

Matt Mooney scored 14 of his team-high 22 points in the second half for the Coyotes. Following a USD timeout with 2.8 seconds left, he missed a three-quarter court heave at the buzzer.

Trey Burch-Manning converted a 3-point play with 11 seconds left that put South Dakota ahead 72-71. Burch-Manning had 15 points and eight rebounds and helped defend Daum down low when big men Austin Sparks and Dan Jech fouled out.

Coyote point guard Trey Dickerson also played thru foul trouble before exiting with 36 seconds to go. He had 14 points and six assists. Carlton Hurst added 13 points for the Coyotes. USD's bench, which had contributed at least 20 points in six straight games, had four Saturday on 1 of 11 shooting.

Andre Wallace came off SDSU's bench and scored 12 points including a pair of 3's. Reed Tellinghuisen had three triples and 11 points. A.J. Hess also hit three 3's and had 10 points. The Jacks were 9 of 22 from downtown.

Flack tweaked his knee during Thursday's win at home against Omaha, but promptly returned and scored 12 consecutive points for South Dakota. He is South Dakota's second-leading scorer and top rebounder.

South Dakota stays on the road and will take on Denver Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT.
