Coyotes shut down Hall and the Bobcats

MBB: USD 74, MSU 57

VERMILLION, S.D.—Trey Burch-Manning and Tyler Peterson scored a game-high 15 points apiece to lead four South Dakota players in double figures in a 74-57 win against Montana State Wednesday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The win moves the Coyotes to 5-0 in their new facility and 7-4 overall. Montana State, which got 13 points from Quinton Everett and 12 from Tyler Hall, fell to 5-5. These two teams will meet again 11 days from now in Bozeman, Mont. USD has won all three meetings since 2013.

Matt Mooney drained a 3-pointer from between half court and the top of the arc at the first half horn to cap an 8-0 run that gave South Dakota a 32-24 advantage. Mooney scored all 11 of his points in the first half. The run continued with back-to-back buckets from Tyler Flack and Burch-Manning and South Dakota led by at least seven points the rest of the way.

Flack had 12 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth collegiate double-double and third in nine games this season. He's scored at least 12 in every game this year. Flack also blocked four shots giving him 120 during his four-year career. His next swat will move him into the top five in program history.

South Dakota guard Carlton Hurst's line read five points, seven rebounds and two steals in 32 minutes of work, but that almost misses the story entirely. He shadowed Hall on the defensive end throughout the game and helped limit the preseason all-Big Sky candidate to 12 points on 10 shots. Hall scored 42 Monday against Milwaukee and is the nation's third-leading scorer at nearly 25 points per game. He scored eight early, but went more than 27 minutes of game time between scores. By then, USD had built a double-digit lead and was well on its way.

"He (Hall) is a prolific scorer, obviously," said USD head coach Craig Smith. "He had 42 the other night and he's averaging 24.8. I'm really proud of our effort. We always want to try to take the heart out of the lion so to speak, and he's certainly their heart and their pulse and Carlton was really good. When they took Hall out, we took Carlton out. But that was the key to the game, no doubt."

The Bobcats were held 26 points below their season average and to a 4-of-20 effort from 3-point range. Montana State had been averaging 11 made 3's per game, which ranks fourth nationally.

"That was probably our best defensive game of the year and that's clearly what won the game," said Smith. "That takes a lot of discipline. That takes a lot of intelligence as to know how do they get those (3s) and I thought our guys did a great job following the game plan."

Meanwhile, the Coyotes got a 3-for-4 effort downtown from Peterson, a true freshman who logged 22 minutes off the bench to net a season high. Triston Simpson (6), Dan Jech (4) and Brandon Armstrong (2) also helped contribute 27 bench points, the team's highest total in six games.

South Dakota out-rebounded Montana State 45-36, including 19 offensive rebounds, scored 19 points off 17 Bobcat turnovers, and out-scored MSU 15-9 at the free-throw line. The Coyotes made six of their first 15 free-throw attempts and finished 15 of 27 from the stripe.

South Dakota stays home to host another Big Sky opponent, Sacramento State (2-6), at 1 p.m. Saturday.
