LAS VEGAS—South Dakota lost a 14-3 decision to 20
th-ranked Washington and a 13-5 decision to Utah Valley on day two of the Sportco Kick Off Classic hosted by UNLV. The Coyotes (0-3) return to the field at 3:30 p.m. CST Sunday against Lamar.
The Washington Huskies (3-0) drew 13 walks and got a 4-for-4 effort from Julia DePonte, who had an RBI double and an RBI triple during the day. Shortstop Ali Aguilar, a first-team all-Pac 12 performer, was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Madi Schreyer, a transfer from Stanford, went the distance in the circle for Washington. She allowed five hits and had five strikeouts.
South Dakota first baseman
Yvon Minogue had a lead-off home run against Schreyer in the first. It was her second home run in as many games.
Jessica Rogers added a solo shot in the fifth inning that cut the Huskies lead to 10-3. It was the first collegiate homer for Rogers, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb.
In the nightcap, Utah Valley (1-3) scored nine runs on 10 hits in the third inning that erased the Coyotes' 2-0 lead. Kristy Snyder and Brittney Vansway hit back-to-back homers in the inning. Haley Harrison had two hits and scored twice in the frame. She finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs.
USD left fielder
Katie Cochran was 3-for-3 against the Wolverines. Her home run to left centerfield extended the game and cut Utah Valley's lead to 12-5. Minogue had a two-run double back in the fourth inning. It was the first two bagger of the season for Minogue, who led the nation with 26 doubles a year ago.
