VERMILLION, S.D.—Three Coyotes reached double figures as South Dakota cruised past Oral Roberts 71-48 inside the DakotaDome Saturday.
South Dakota (20-5, 11-1) reached the 20-win mark for the second consecutive season. The Coyotes have won 10 straight to get there, a streak that is tied for the 12th-longest in NCAA Division I. Oral Roberts (11-14, 8-5) drops its second contest of the week in the state of South Dakota.
"This was a good team win," USD head coach
Amy Williams commented. "Oral Roberts was our one league loss and I thought their defense in Tulsa really forced us to take shots that they wanted us to take and not necessarily the shots that we would like to take. And because of that we shot 28 percent down there.
"We knew we were going to have to attack them a little better this time around. I thought we did a good job of that and had some good contributions from our bench."
Senior guard
Nicole Seekamp led the way with 17 points, five assists and three rebounds.
Junior center
Abigail Fogg surpassed double-digits for the second consecutive game. Fogg had seven-straight points in a minute span in the third quarter to help the Coyotes pull away. She finished with 11 and also grabbed a team high eight rebounds.
"Abigail's really playing with confidence right now and that's a huge factor for us," said Williams. "She's been able to have some success, she's playing hard, and she's really locked in. Defensively, she brings something different because she's long and difficult to see around. And then offensively, she's not hesitating to catch and take that mid-range jumper."
Senior guard
Tia Hemiller scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Hemiller also added five defensive rebounds. Senior center
Margaret McCloud added nine points and five boards.
Oral Roberts also had three in double digits with forward Maria Martianez tying her career high of 14 points. Guard Jordan Doyle and forward Faith Ihim each scored 11. The Golden Eagles shot 34.7 percent (17-for-49) from the field.
McCloud scored the opening bucket and after a tie at 4-4 the Coyotes led the remainder of the contest.
South Dakota edged Oral Roberts 38-32 in the rebounding battle. The Coyotes had seven second-chance points while holding the Golden Eagles to two.
The Coyotes scored 18 points off 17 Golden Eagle turnovers. South Dakota also had eight fast break points.
South Dakota continues its three-game home stand with Western Illinois and South Dakota State next week. The Coyotes host the Leathernecks at 7 p.m. Thursday and turn around to host the Jackrabbits at 2 p.m. Saturday.
