Huffman homers on day two in San Diego

Campbell/Cartier Classic

SAN DIEGO—Kentucky pitcher Meagan Prince pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the Wildcats' 10-0 win against South Dakota on day two of San Diego State's Campbell/Cartier Classic. South Dakota broke up a no-hit bid by San Diego pitcher Grace Hernandez in the seventh inning of the nightcap. The Coyotes scored three runs in their final at bat, but lost 6-3 to the Toreros to fall to 0-9.

Abbey Cheek had a three-run double for 18th-ranked Kentucky (8-2) in the top of the first inning and Katie Reed's solo home run in the fourth gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead. Kentucky tacked on three more in the fifth and finished with 10 hits in the game.

Coyote second baseman Jamie Holscher reached base on a fielding error by Kentucky in the bottom of the first inning and was the only runner allowed by Prince, who struck out nine.

South Dakota remained hitless until pinch hitter Jessica Rogers singled to left field off Hernandez in the top of the seventh inning of game two. Olivia Huffman homered two batters later to cut San Diego's lead to 6-2 and Yvon Minogue added an RBI single later in the inning. Hernandez got Holscher to line out to short with two on for the final out of the game.

Hernandez (1-2) walked four and struck out seven to earn her first win of the season. She allowed four hits in the final inning.

San Diego (4-4) scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to break the game open. Taylor Spence's two-run single was the final blow. Tatum Schultz and Olivia Sandusky at the top of the order combined for half of the Toreros' eight hits.

For Huffman, a freshman from Woodbury, Minn., the homer was her first collegiate hit. She joined Rogers as Coyote freshmen whose first collegiate hits were home runs. South Dakota wraps up play in San Diego at 11 a.m. CST Sunday against Texas Tech.
