Margaret McCloud and junior guard
Jasmine Trimboli each scored the 1,000th point of their careers as the Coyotes defeated Fort Wayne 90-63 inside Gates Sports Center Thursday night.
South Dakota (23-5, 14-1) clinched its second consecutive Summit League regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Summit League Tournament. The Coyotes will play at noon on March 5. Fort Wayne (6-22, 2-13 Summit) hosts North Dakota State on Saturday to determine the final spot in the tournament.
Senior guard
Tia Hemiller finished a perfect 6-for-6 from the field for a team-high 14 points. Hemiller also dished out five assists and grabbed three rebounds.
McCloud scored six points to become the 12th player in program history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Trimboli scored four to surpass 1,000 points after two seasons at Iowa Western CC.
Senior guard
Nicole Seekamp scored 11 points, handed out five assists and stole the ball three times. She moved to second on USD's all-time career steals list with 251. Seekamp now ranks second for points, assists and steals in South Dakota program history.
Fort Wayne's Kamilah Carter scored 21 points behind a career-high six made 3-pointers. She was 6-of-13 behind the arc. Guard Josie Fisher came off the bench to score 10 points in the fourth quarter. She also stole the ball four times. Guard De'Jour Young added 10 more points.
The Coyotes shot 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the field in the third quarter to cushion their lead. The Mastodons committed eight of their 18 turnovers in the quarter. Hemiller had seven in the time span and junior guard
Caitlin Duffy had five. Duffy finished with nine points.
South Dakota finished 30-of-49 for a season-best 61.2 percent from the field. The Yotes also made 24-of-29 free throws.
South Dakota's bench scored 45 points in the game, led by sophomore
Kate Liveringhouse. Liveringhouse was in double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. She also had five rebounds. Junior forward
Bridget Arens made five free throws and two field goals for a season high nine points. Junior center
Abigail Fogg added eight more.
The Coyote women were cheered on by the men's and women's track and field teams, in town for the Summit League Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday.
The Coyotes have won 13 straight games headed into Saturday's game at IUPUI. The Coyotes and the Jaguars tip off at 6 p.m. CT Saturday.
