Smith gets win 100 as USD beats ORU

VERMILLION, S.D.—A 12-2 run to close out the game helped South Dakota close out Oral Roberts during a 91-79 win Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
 
Five South Dakota starters scored in double figures led by Casey Kasperbauer's 17 points. The Coyotes also got 15 points off the bench from Tre Burnette and nine from Dan Jech. The win was the 100th for USD head coach Craig Smith.
 
Oral Roberts (11-14, 3-8 Summit) got 26 points from Obi Emegano, the ninth-leading scorer in the nation, and 17 from Albert Owens. The two combined to make 20 of 22 free throws. Oral Roberts was swept in its regular season series with South Dakota for the first time.
 
South Dakota had a 14-point, second-half lead cut to 79-77 on a three-point play by Omegano with 2:29 remaining. The Coyotes beat a full-court press with a dunk by Tyler Flack on the other end to make it 81-77. Flack didn't miss a shot all game and finished with 12 points.
 
Emegano was fouled on the ensuing possession, but missed both free throws – his first misses after making 13 straight to begin the game.
 
Coyote guard Trey Norris was fouled in the back court and made two free throws to make it 83-77 with 1:56 to go. They were the first of six consecutive makes by Norris, who scored 15 points and handed out eight assists.
 
Kasperbauer, the nation's leading free-throw shooter at 96 percent, completed a 10-0 run with two free throws with 50 seconds left. He added two more with 28 ticks remaining for the game's final points. Kasperbauer was 6 for 6 from the line and has made 47 consecutive free throws dating back to late November.
 
South Dakota (11-14, 3-8) had its third-best shooting night of the season at 53 percent (32 of 60). The Coyotes also hit seven triples and made 20 of 27 free throws. Oral Roberts shot 41 percent from the field (23 of 56), made six 3's and was 27 of 32 from the stripe.
 
The Coyotes led 40-34 at the half and began the second half on a 14-6 run that gave them their largest lead at 54-40 with 15 minutes to go. Flack had two buckets and six points during the rally, but picked up his fourth foul with 16:50 showing. USD made six of its first seven shots out of halftime.
 
Owens scored 11 points in the next six minutes to help the Eagles close within three at 63-60 with nine minutes to go. Owens was 5 of 11 from the field and 7 of 7 from the line. He also had half of Oral Roberts' eight blocks.
 
Kasperbauer scored 11 points over the game's final nine minutes. He was 4 of 8 from the field and hit three triples. He surpassed 1,100 points in his career at USD.
 
Eric Robertson had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for South Dakota. D.J. Davis also had 10 for USD. The Coyotes wrap up a three-game win streak Thursday against North Dakota State.
