OMAHA, Neb.—South Dakota junior center
Abigail Fogg came off the bench with a career high 14 points as the Coyotes survived Omaha 70-55 inside Baxter Arena Sunday.
Omaha (11-12, 4-7 Summit) put up 28 points in the third quarter to give South Dakota (19-5, 10-1 Summit) a second-half scare. The Coyotes closed strong in the fourth to win their ninth-straight game.
"This is a tough place to win, so I'm proud of our team for coming in and getting the win today," said head coach
Amy Williams. "Omaha showed us what they are capable of in that third quarter. They came out in the second half and punched us twice before we even knew what hit us. We had to regroup and I'm proud of us for making the adjustments we needed to."
Fogg scored eight points in the paint on 4-of-6 shooting during the Coyotes' comeback run in the fourth quarter.
Senior guard
Nicole Seekamp also scored 14 points with six assists and three steals. Seekamp moved past Meghan Woster (2003-06) to second on USD's all-time charts with 537 career assists Sunday. It was also Seekamp's 100th game in double figures.
Omaha used an 18-4 at the start of the second half to make it a one-point game. Maverick forward Sara Echelberry nailed her only 3-point field goal of the game with 3:07 remaining in the third to tie the score 37-37.
Summit League leading scorer forward Mikaela Shaw was held to 13 points and nine rebounds for Omaha. She converted a pair of 3-point plays to spark the Mavericks' run during the third quarter. Guard Remy Davenport added 11 points and forward Caroline Hogue contributed nine for the Mavs.
To keep the Coyotes in the game, junior guard
Jasmine Trimboli scored six of USD's 11 points in the third quarter. Trimboli finished with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Seekamp hit a three with 9:36 to go in the fourth as the Coyotes took the lead for the final time.
South Dakota took the battle of the boards 43-31. Most notably, the Coyotes had 13 offensive rebounds in the first half. The offensive boards resulted in 17 second-chance points for the Coyotes, while Omaha was held to two second-chance put-backs.
Sophomore center
Kate Liveringhouse led the Coyotes in rebounding with seven boards, while adding six points. Senior center
Margaret McCloud had three of USD's offensive boards and Trimboli added three more. McCloud finished with eight points and five rebounds.
The Coyotes returns home to host Oral Roberts inside the DakotaDome at 2 p.m. Saturday.
