Minogue breaks hits record in split with Kansas City

All-Time Hits Queen

VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota senior first baseman Yvon Minogue became the Coyotes' all-time hits leader during a doubleheader against Kansas City Tuesday at Nygaard Field. Her double in the fifth inning of game one gave her 243 career hits, one more than Julie MacRunnels, who had held the record since 2003.

Minogue posted four hits on the day to up her total to 246. Her next hit will tie her for fourth place on the Summit League's all-time hit list.

South Dakota split with Kansas City, dropping game one 10-2 and winning the nightcap 7-6 in eight innings. A walk-off RBI double by Katie Cochran in the bottom of the eighth scored Jamie Holscher for the winning run in game two. Coyote pitcher Madison Frain got four outs in relief to earn the win.

Kansas City (14-18) broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning of game one with three runs in the top of the sixth and five more in the seventh. A two-out, two-run double by Katie Kelley in the sixth gave the 'Roos a 4-2 lead. Kansas City posted 16 hits in game one and got six strong innings in the circle from starter Amber Grove, who allowed solo home runs to Jessica Rogers and Shelby Keil, but nothing more while striking out six.

Keil and Sydney Hancock each hit two-run home runs for South Dakota (13-27) in game two to help the Coyotes take a 6-2 lead. But Kansas City made it 6-3 on a solo shot by Kelley in the sixth, cut the lead to 6-5 on a two-run blast by Bri Sims in the seventh and tied it on a home run by Kelsey Goodwin when the 'Roos were down to their final out.

Kansas City hit five home runs on the day and South Dakota hit four. Sims was 5-for-6 during the twin bill with a double and three RBIs. Minogue was 4-for-9 with two doubles for the Coyotes. Cochran was 3-for-8 with two doubles. Keil and Steinfeldt have hit five and six home runs, respectively, this season.

Frain (10-10), who started game one, retired four of the five hitters she faced in game two to push the game into the home half of the eighth. Holscher reached base on an error and moved to second on a base hit to center by Minogue. Cochran sent the first pitch she saw to the wall in right field and the relay to the plate was late in getting Holscher.

South Dakota is off this weekend and will return to action next Tuesday in a doubleheader against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa.
